 December Update from the Field

The balmy weather of late November through into December is a mixed blessing.  The vistas, the sunsets, the colors and the dry ground beneath our feet are cherished. The geese flying high in the sky on day after bluebird day not so much.  We are yearning for some low cloud, a short winter storm or two and a covering of snow to give us a chance of outwitting these clever, wary birds!

For all that, the pheasant hunting is glorious! Getting an early start is rewarded by intercepting roosting birds and keeping them on our side of the fence. We are seeing, still, an almost equal number of wild and released birds in each bag.  A beautiful pair of green wing teal were taken 2 days ago, birds in their deeply-colored winter plumage, most unusual for this late in the season.

Our pups are maturing. Rimu, at eight months old, still has a lot to learn but is already a very useful retriever (he retrieves "to foot" at the moment) but finds birds the others miss. Violet - "Steady Eddy" - still has what it takes and is usually the MVP of the hunt.  But Reacher is coming along great..... you can read more in Bruce's latest blog post.
