When we decided to enhance for ground-nesting birds - ringneck pheasants in particular - Bruce went to the UK and Europe to interview the gamekeepers on royal estates to find out first hand about their best management practices. What he learned was implemented in Shepherd, and, beginning in 2000, Bruce kept detailed records for seven years to monitor the success of the techniques. Pheasant harvest went from fourteen in Year 1 to 207 in year seven. Some of the changes may surprise you - but they are widely applicable to anyone wanting to encourage these glorious birds to take up residence on their own property. The study was published for a wildlife conference - you can read it here.

Water |
Growing up in Wisconsin, Bruce spent many months as a fishing guide, when he encountered his first floating islands in the same waters that were home to world-record Muskelunge. Intrigued by this apparent paradox, he began to study, then bio-mimic, such floating islands, and along the way has learned so much about water quality that he is now a thought leader on successful and sustainable ways to "heal" water. BioHaven floating islands are part of this strategy, a tool to help get the main job done: harvest. When you join our Paleo Living "Chautauqua", you can take a floating island tour and witness a waterbody in transition: where more nutrients are being cycled out than come in - and you can help with the harvest if you like fishing or even want to gig some frogs (not for the fainthearted!).
